In many cases, hearing loss produces unwelcomed isolation, and numerous communication
problems. Individuals with hearing loss and deafness are targets for abuse, as
well as other forms of disabilities. It is well known that isolation is one of the control methods that abusers utilize in
order to dominate their partners. Unfortunately, friends and family often turn
away from loved ones with disabilities, which leave them wounded and vulnerable to mistreatment.

Imagine
this, the police are called to a domestic disturbance, and the husband who is a hearing individual is asked to interpret for
his abused deaf wife. He punched her in the mouth, and the husband claims “She fell” to explain the blood. If
the woman cannot speak nor hear, she is left in the dark, and at the mercy of her abusive husband to tell the police whatsoever
he desires. Can you imagine the horror she is feeling? And of course, she will mostly likely get beaten again once the police
leave.
